Following formation of L-DOPA and 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), the enzyme aromatic amino acid decarboxylase (AADC) converts these chemicals to the active neurotransmitters, dopamine and serotonin. Deficiency of AADC will therefore lead to a failure to produce these key neurotransmitters.
