AADC PhD Student Starts Research

Neurochemical  Consequences of Aromatic L-Amino Acid Decarboxylase Deficiency - Implications for Disease Progression and Treatment

Since the Charity's inception, in May 2006, we embarked on the enormous task of raising funds for the AADC Research Project above.  Simon Heales submitted a proposal requesting a 3-year PhD Studentship in the sum of £89.000.

We are delighted to report that we have now fully funded this project and successfully appointed the PhD Studentship to Mr George Allen.

“On Monday October 1st (2007) George Allen officially enrolled as a PhD student and this marked the commencement of the AADC funded research project.  George will carry out his research in labs at the Institute of Neurology (UCL)/National Hospital for Neurology and will be performing research focussed on identifying biochemical mechanisms that may be important contributors to the neurological problems that children with AADC suffer from.   The ultimate aim of this work will be to provide new scientific data that could eventually lead to new treatment options being provided for children with AADC.  George has already started working in the lab and his first task will be to develop a test that will allow him to measure the AADC enzyme.  This test will be used to diagnose new patients with AADC and will be used in George’s research into the AADC disease process”  Simon Heales PhD

Regular updates from the lab will be provided.

George, we welcome you to the world AADC deficiency!

Our grateful thanks to all those who helped make this possible.
